Evolution of the Honda Civic Si

By Aidan Evans

    The
Automobile magazine recently released an article comparing the "1999 Honda Civic Si vs. 2020 Honda Civic Si". This is going to be a simplified description of the article. First, I'll start by telling you that the Civic Si is the sportier faster version of a regular Honda Civic. For a couple of bucks more, you could get this variation of the stock Civic with a little more zip to it. The most noticeable difference is the increase in horsepower. Both the, 1999 Civic Si and the 2020 Civic Si share this increase in horsepower. But, there have been many improvements and tweaks to this reliable car over the years. I'll start with the 1999 Civic Si. This older version of the car was lighter, smaller, and less computerized. This car came with a 1.6L (liter) inline 4 cylinder engine with 160hp (horsepower). This car was affordable and reliable as well as customizable. Honda Civics have always been a popular car to add modifications too or switching parts. This is something I'm worried about with the newer more computerized 2020 Civic Si. Learning how to work on a car replacing parts, changing oil, or something like that is something I encourage everyone to learn how to do. In the long run, this will save you a lot of money. I'm worried that newer Civics will become exhausting to work on. The modern Si has a 1.5L turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine with 205hp. This modern Si features a 6-speed manual transmission rather than the usual 5-speed manual transmission. My favorite feature about the modern Honda Civics is that they still have a manual transmission. Many car companies have stopped building their cars with standard transmissions. They do this because it is more efficient as well as less problematic. My first car was a manual 2006 Honda Civic, so I have a soft spot for manual cars. Using this type of transmission allows better control of the speed of the vehicle. It also has a simpler design than an automatic transmission making it easier to repair. Civics of all kinds have parked in their place in automotive history and continue to be a beloved form of transportation.
